Soutron Rock

Clinging to its rock, the pretty chapel of Soutron is the goal of this short climb that also offers a beautiful view on all of the Boutières and the Sucs.
Clinging to its rock, at a height of 1137 m, i.e. 500 m above the Eysse River going through Arcens, the Soutron Chapel is among those magical mountain sites that seem to float between heaven and earth. Blending totally with the summit thanks to its phonolite walls and flagstone roof, it seems to defy gravity and to be one with the rock. The site is so majestic that you will not be disappointed by this rather short walk. One can only wonder at the effort needed to build this chapel and, more recently, to restore it. Although the pilgrimage Masses are now celebrated on a terrace down below, the site still keeps an amount of religiousness. From up there, the 360-degree view is stunning on all the Mézenc-Gerbier range, a large part of the Boutières and even beyond Sainte-Agrève.

Description

  1. Take the path going straight ahead towards "le Calvaire, 1.4 km, Arcens, 5.8 km". The path first goes down to a flat.
  2. At the crossways, stay on the main path on the right. Go past the picnic table and begin the climb starting with a wide path.
  3. Once on a flat, a small open-air altar reminds you of the religious role of this place which is still in use during the yearly procession. The path continues on the right. After the woods, it gets more winding and steeper on the side of the mountain.
  4. After the last few stairs, you will reach the Chapel of Soutron, clinging to its rock. Do not hesitate to go inside, it is always open. You may go past the chapel to climb to the top of the rock and reach the cross, but it is strictly forbidden to continue on the ridge up to the second summit. Go down by the same way.
  • Departure : In front of the parking lot, a clearly pointed out path leads up to the chapel
  • Towns crossed : ARCENS
